Four stars

Two big thumbs up for tonight’s drink, both for flavor and for punch. This is just a perfect balance of sweet and strong, and it wipes away even the most soul-sucking workday.

I just started reading Drinking the Devils’s Acre: A Love Letter from San Francisco and Her Cocktails by Duggan McDonnell, and today’s cocktail is one of his selected variations on the Martinez.  I found this very subtle, with all the components in a nice balance.  I used Aviation Gin, but I could see using this drink as a test case for other gins since the Lillet and Benedictine were so subtle.  The juice from the Luxardo cherries made a lovely design at the bottom of the glass, which just added to the feeling that while I was drinking something very sophisticated, but with a wink and a nudge from the bartender.
